How can a school community support English as an Additional Language learners through a literacy after school program across ECE, Primary, Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions.

We are a group of 5 Canadian teachers across the school board spectrum from Early Years to Secondary School  with a variety of local, interprovincial and international experience who are interested in fostering a more effective English as an Additional Language in schools today. The group has decided that the best, most reasonable and feasible solution to the ongoing issue of EAL literacy and support in our schools today can be best solved with the implementation of an after school program. Kelly and Norwich (2005) states some children preferred withdrawal programs for various reasons including 1. better quality education, 2. less noise and distraction, 3. more attention, and 4. less bullying. An after school program is able to pull together the benefits of withdrawal programs for EAL learners while avoiding the stigmatisation of their peers and missing regular class time.

Since no two situations are similar, we have decided to propose a program that will create a possible solution for many different types of students, schools and age ranges, while taking many different factors into account.  This way, teachers and administers have the opportunity to see a variety of options and choose the best resources and schedules that work for them and their individual school community.

We recognise some of the common problems in EAL support programs stem from small or large student bodies, limited qualifications among teachers, various budget problems, lack of resources, and the challenges faced when meeting all of the diverse learning needs within the school environment.
